Ragdale Foundation

The Ragdale house was designed in 1897 by Chicago architect Howard Van Doren Shaw as a family summer retreat, one that would become a haven for several generations of artists from many disciplines. Shaw’s granddaughter created the Ragdale Foundation in 1976, turning the home into a nonprofit artists’ community.  Now in its 44th year, Ragdale annually welcomes more than 200 authors and artists of multiple disciplines through residencies, fellowships, and thematic collaborations to its five-acre campus, giving them the time and space to advance their creative work.
