APA Family Support Services

APA Family Support Services’ (APA) mission is to promote healthy children and families by providing family support services to prevent child abuse and domestic violence. Founded in 1987 by Dr. Don Wong, APA (originally Asian Perinatal Advocates) sought to respond to and support Asian and Pacific Islander immigrant families facing the overwhelming obstacles created by language barriers, cultural conflicts, an unfamiliarity with western medicine, child care practices, and parenting skills. These obstacles often led to a proliferation of family violence, social isolation, depression, and financial hardship. APA stepped in to help bridge those gaps by providing linguistically and culturally appropriate services such as in-home visits, emotional support, and translation services.

In the years since its founding, APA has grown and strengthened its services, and expanded its client base to include not only Asian and Pacific Islander families, but a diverse community of families who face the challenges of parenthood. Through exemplary case management and services provided at their family resource centers, APA has gained a high level of respect and renown in the Bay Area, and has become the foremost advocate and service provider for at-risk Asian and Pacific Islander children and their families, as well as those of many other ethnicities.
