Position Summary:
As the Controller, you are in a key leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of the accounting department and ensuring the financial health of Disciples Church Extension Fund. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), you will manage critical functions, including cash forecasting, monthly close, financial reporting, budgeting, audit, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and staff supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership & Development: Provide daily oversight of the Financial Services team; coach, develop, and mentor to foster cross-training and collaboration for optimal performance.
  • Accounting Policies & Procedures: Evaluate and maintain accounting controls, including segregation of duties, ensuring they are documented, communicated, and consistently enforced. Recommend and implement updates as needed.
  • Internal Controls & Compliance: Oversee, evaluate, and document internal controls and segregation of duties to safeguard assets and ensure GAAP compliance. Manage the Current Expected Credit Losses (CECL) accounting standard to estimate allowances for credit losses on past-due loans.
  • Transaction Strategy & Management: Execute a comprehensive cash management strategy, including short-term and long-term cash management, while ensuring accuracy and timeliness of transaction processing and appropriate supervision of periodic closings and reconciliations.
  • Reporting, Forecasting, & Analysis: Participate in the organizational budgeting process and create financial reports with corresponding analyses, such as budget-to-actual variance reports and monthly financial statements.
  • Tax Compliance: Oversee preparation and filing of all federal, state, and local tax returns, ensuring compliance with tax laws and regulations.
  • Payroll Administration: Oversee and ensure accurate and timely payroll processing, maintaining documentation for all payroll functions in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Stakeholder Relationship Management: Maintain strong relationships with key partners such as advisors and auditors. Serve as the primary contact for the annual external audit, prepare and provide requested information, draft audit report footnotes, and proofread the entire audit draft.
  • Other Responsibilities: Perform other duties as assigned to support the organization’s mission and objectives.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Strong technical accounting skills and a thorough understanding of GAAP and FASB standards.
  • Proven experience in financial reporting, general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and maintain effective internal controls.
  • Experience overseeing accounting teams and supervising staff, preferably in banking or nonprofit sectors.
  • Ability to analyze complex data from multiple sources and make informed decisions.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems such as Microsoft Dynamics.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, especially Excel.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Acute attention to detail with a meticulous focus on accuracy and consistency.
  • Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines in a dynamic work environment.  
  • High level of integrity and ethical standards.

Travel:
  • Minimal travel (up to 10%)
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
  • Hybrid office environment based in Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Occasional lifting (up to 40 lbs.)
  • Long periods of sitting at a desk on a computer
