The Position

Director of Major Giving
The Director of Major Giving will create a formal, strategic, evolving Major Gift Program and oversee donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities for the Cleveland Animal Protective League. Identify new donors and grow the base for the annual fund and other specific projects. Oversee a portfolio of donors and identify gift opportunities and prospective donors. Oversee activities of Donor Relations Officer and support the VP of Philanthropy and Communications, CEO, and board members involved in direct solicitation of major gifts and community outreach.

The Cleveland APL’s mission is to foster compassion and end animal suffering. As a 501(c)(3) agency, we are not funded or controlled by any government or national animal welfare organization. Our animal shelter, services, and programs are made available through fundraising, donations, foundation and corporate support, and service fees.

We are committed to 100 percent placement of adoptable animals and envision a time when every friendly, healthy, homeless animal in our community can be cared for until a new family is found. The Cleveland APL provides shelter to homeless animals relinquished by their guardians, animals that are rescued from abuse or neglect, and stray or abandoned cats.

This position supports the Cleveland APL’s mission and values which include Compassion, Advocacy, Leadership, Innovation, and Community.

  • Compassion by developing, overseeing, participating in and guiding others in all aspects of the major gift cycle. To emphasize the impact their gift will help to provide veterinary care for wonderful animals that are looking for a chance, not only to survive, but also to heal and be given a chance to start a new, healthy life with a family full of love.
  • Advocacy by articulating a Case for Support so that donors understand the APL’s mission and its role as a community resource that assists in championing efforts that will improve animals’ lives, keep them with the people they love, and create public policy that recognizes and promotes their value in society.
  • Leadership by maintaining meticulous and timely records on donor and prospecting activity to maintain our Four-Star Charity rating that shows commitment to acting with integrity and duty to community.
  • Innovation by evaluating various gift opportunities and coordinating effective programming for recognition of donors with respect to their commitment to supporting the APL’s efforts as a leading animal welfare organization to adjust to the evolving challenges animals face.
  • Community by preparing and presenting well-conceived proposals to empower donors to work together with the APL on fulfilling our vision of a society in which animals are valued, treated with dignity and respect, and protected from cruelty and neglect.

The Ideal Candidate

What we are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management (or related field such as communications, public relations, marketing, or business) or comparable work experience with demonstrated success.
  • At least 5 years of experience in fundraising with a specific emphasis on management of a major gift program, individual fundraising, and experience closing gifts of at least $25,000.
