Director of Outreach and Advocacy

Guide Dogs for the Blind has an amazing opportunity to work in our Outreach and Alumni Department located at our beautiful campus in San Rafael.  We are seeking a full time Director of Outreach and Advocacy (Director of O&A) provides leadership in developing and implementing strategies, policies and programs to effectively enhance Guide Dogs for the Blind’s efforts in broadening client outreach and support, serving the visually impaired community, and advocating for policies, laws and programs that support GDB’s mission.  This position supervises a staff of two. 

The Director of O&A will build a network of organizations which work with individuals  who are blind, consumer groups, and others related to Guide Dogs for the Blind’s mission to support and advocate for organizational objectives and enhance recruitment.   


In collaboration with GDB’s Marketing team the Director of O&A will develop, implement, and maintain effective marketing plans and strategies designed to provide outreach to qualified candidates resulting in GDB’s ability to serve more individuals. 


In addition they will monitor and implement strategies and draft responses to local, state, and federal pending legislation, existing laws, and corporate policies that may impact persons working with guide dogs and service animals. 

In collaboration with the VP of OAA and under direction of the CEO and Executive Team, prepare correspondence and background papers reflecting GDB’s positions and concerns on issues that impact guide dog handlers and potential clients.

In collaboration with the VP of OAA serve as a spokesperson for the organization via various media including radio, TV, and print to advance the mission of GDB.


We are seeking a minimum of five years related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in public policy, orientation and mobility or other position-related academic program along with a graduate degree preferred. Ability to create, steward, and rally support behind a vision, to think “big picture”. A record of leadership in working with blind and visually impaired individuals, groups, and organizations.


 Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends and to  travel throughout the United States and Canada approximately 30% of the time. Intermediate to advanced skills using Microsoft office products such as Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint etc. Ability to use databases, voicemail, braille, JAWS and other tools used by individuals who are visually impaired.
