Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Represent SMACNA contractors to Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation (SMART) local union and other unions and associations. Participate and/or organize a variety of labor and management-oriented activities such as collective bargaining negotiations, management representation for any grievances, labor contract administration, labor/management meetings, and training and education.
  • Represent the contractors in cooperating with other trade groups and unions in the local region.
  • As a Trustee with fiduciary responsibility, represent contractors’ interests on the JATC Trust, Industrial Pension, Master Pension, and Health Trust.
  • Organize, facilitate, and appropriately disseminate information of Chapter, Board, Committee, Task Force and Trust meetings.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with the Board of Directors, labor partnerships, membership, staff, elected officials and governmental agencies, and other organizations necessary to further the Chapter’s objectives.
  • Establish a sound organizational structure to direct and coordinate programs and major activities, increase member engagement with association activities, and maximize staff performance.
  • Prepare annual budget, maintain Chapter financial accounts, ensure financial integrity, and assure organizational financial stability and security.
  • Ensure that the Board of Directors is proactively and fully informed of the condition and operations of the Chapter. 
  • Apprise membership of appropriate legislative issues at the local, state, and national level; and support and participate in Chapter and industry sponsored legislative initiatives.
  • Plan, formulate, and recommend for approval membership programs, services, and partnerships to grow Chapter membership.
  • Assure appropriate filings are made with all required governmental authorities, and declaratory documents are secured and maintained.
  • Write, or have written, reports for the Chapter Board, Committees, Task Forces, and Trusts; and maintain records for informational, legal and historical purposes.
  • Working with the Chapter’s Director of Membership Services, oversee and support membership activities and functions such as member communications, membership meetings, trade shows and social functions among others.
  • Provide the necessary liaison and staff support to industry committees to enable them to properly perform their functions.  Submit committee decisions and recommendations to the Board of Directors. 
  • Ensure that all funds, physical assets, and other property of the Chapter are appropriately safeguarded and administered.
  • Represent our Local Chapter at National Association activities and disseminate appropriate information to the association’s members.
  • Establish the annual calendar.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Union contractor management experience is highly desired.
  • Basic understanding of labor law and the principles of collective bargaining is highly desired.
  • Knowledgeable about unions and the complexities and sensitivities of operating in a partnership with organized labor.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in business management and organizational leadership, preferably in a similar role. (e.g., professional / trade association, nonprofit, construction industry)
  • Prior experience with multi-employer trusts.
  • Experience working with or reporting to a Board of Directors, and ability to guide and influence elected volunteer leaders.
  • Financial acumen: ability to understand and use financial data to make sound business decisions.
  • Utmost integrity, and personal and professional ethics.
  • Strategic and forward thinker who takes a hands-on approach to accomplish goals and expectations.
  • Takes initiative, is self-directed and works well with minimal supervision.
  • Keen negotiation and influencing skills with ability to effectively manage and resolve conflict.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and follow-through on all projects, tasks and assignments.
  • Ability to effectively communicate the value proposition of the association; and inspire and reassure constituents that their interests are well served by supporting the association.
  • Highly organized and effectively prioritizes tasks to meet business needs.
  • Successful track record of building and maintaining strategic relationships.
  • Awareness of the legal responsibilities and constraints of private, nonprofit organizations.
  • Skilled at developing, implementing and evaluating programs, services, policies and procedures.
  • Exhibits personal professionalism in appearance and demeanor.
  • Comfortable operating in a digital world (information, product and service delivery) and remains current on emerging technologies.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Compensation:

Salary range $160K/year or higher commensurate with education and experience; potential discretionary bonus based on organizational and individual performance; 401K; fully paid medical and dental insurance; paid holidays and paid time off (PTO). Telecommuting flexibility while focusing on the business needs of the organization.
