The City of Pasadena is seeking talented, creative, passionate, and experienced instructors to develop and teach classes and workshops in a variety of program areas such as recreation, sports, fitness and wellness, arts and crafts, dance, drama, music, science, computers, and nature for school age children. These are part-time positions working up to 19 hours per week.The ideal candidate for the instructor role is a customer-focused team player with strong communications skills and friendly demeanor who is able to lead, develop, and teach courses and/or workshops in one or more of the content areas described above.Instructor vacancies may be filled throughout the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, including:Afterschool Adventures Program- Instructors work with students in an afterschool setting developing activities and classes for school aged children. The ideal after school Instructor candidate will possess recent experience developing and teaching recreation classes in arts & crafts, dance, drama, music, science, or sports & fitness.* Afterschool Adventures Program Instructors must be available to work Monday from 11:30 am to 6:00 pm and Tuesday through Friday from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm.La Pintoresca Park (currently being renovated!)- Instructors work in an outdoor urban park setting developing, teaching, and leading a variety of innovative recreation programming and activities for adults and children. These positions are for individuals with a sports and fitness background, including basketball, football and boxing. Experience in an urban setting developing and instructing recreational classes and workshops in arts & crafts, dance, drama, music and other leisure activities is highly desirable .* La Pintoresca Park Instructors must be available to work Monday through Friday between the hours of 2:00 pm and 6:30 pm, and some Saturday’s and special events work.City of Pasadena Community Centers- Instructors work at one of the City’s community centers and are involved in creating and developing recreation classes and programming including fitness and wellness activities for adults, youth sports programming, etc.* Work hours vary depending on the assigned community center and may include day, evening, and weekend hours.Essential FunctionsThe major responsibilities of this position are listed below. For more detailed information, please review the job description.* Develops and teaches assigned classes and workshops in recreation program areas such as arts and crafts, dance, drama, music, science, computers, nature, fitness and wellness, and sports for youth and/or adults.* Implements programming and provides positive reinforcement to encourage a fun and supportive environment; establishes, and maintains cohesive group participation.* Adjusts and continually improves material flexibility in response to student needs, innovations in the field, and technological delivery options.* Provides supervision in the absence of the Site Coordinator; provides support to other recreation sites as needed.* Determines and recommends supplies and equipment needed for assigned classes; transports and ensures the security of equipment and supplies issued.* Continually observes and takes the necessary precautions to ensure the safety and security of program participants.* Promotes good public relations for the City; builds community relations with park, afterschool site, and/or community center patrons, participants, community and other City Departments.* Maintains records (attendance reports, progress reports, program planning proposals and accident reports) and submits reports in a timely manner.Qualification GuidelinesCORECOMPETENCIESThe following list represents the core competencies needed for success in this position.* Professional & Technical Expertise – Knowledge of the process in developing and instructing effective recreational classes and activities; equipment, supplies, and rules used in typical sports, outdoor education/adventures, and recreation activities.* Self-Management – Showing personal organization, self-discipline, and dependability.* Innovation – Imagining and devising new and better ways of doing things.* Group Facilitation – Enabling constructive and productive group interaction.* Oral Communication – Engaging effectively in dialogue.* Customer Focus – Attending to the needs and expectations of the customers.* Safety Focus – Showing vigilance and care in identifying and addressing health risks and safety hazards.EDUCATION ANDEXPERIENCE* A minimum of one year of recent experience teaching recreational activities in one of the program areas listed above or one year of education in Recreation/Physical Education or related field, or combination.* Individuals with two or more years of recent experience teaching recreation activities for youth and/or adults will be deemed most qualified.SELECTION PROCESSThe selection process may consist of a training and experience evaluation and the most highly qualified candidates may be invited to participate in a written, oral or performance examination.VACANCIESThere are currently two vacancies, one in the Afterschool Adventures Program and one at La Pintoresca Park in the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department.The resulting eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill this vacancy and similar vacancies in the future.These positions are at-will, part-time up to 19 hours per week.
