Organization Summary:
 
Target ALS is a 501(c)(3) public non-profit whose mission is that everyone with ALS should live. Since 2013, the foundation has built an innovative ecosystem for biomedical research that has catalyzed ALS drug discovery efforts through collaboration between academic and industry scientists. The foundation is going through exponential growth and has embarked on a new phase of its existence aimed at finding effective treatments for all forms of ALS within the next decade.

We are looking for a mission driven candidate who can translate work of the organization into compelling content that raises its profile in the broader community that includes people living with ALS, donors, researchers and the public.

Position Purpose:  The Manager of Mission Communications will be responsible for translating complex scientific concepts into clear, engaging content for diverse audiences. The ideal candidate will have a background in biomedical research and excellent writing skills, and strong grasp of marketing practices. This role will be crucial in elevating the Target ALS brand, highlighting our impact, amplifying our research funding and resources opportunities, and inspiring financial support and engagement from various stakeholders.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
 

  • Content Creation
    • Write, edit, and publish high-quality content including research summaries, press releases, blog posts, newsletters, social media updates, science brochures, and annual reports.
    • Develop compelling stories that highlight the impact of Target ALS’s research initiatives and collaborations.
    • Create content that illustrates how Target ALS is building a world where everyone with ALS can live.
  • Research Communication
    • Translate complex scientific research and concepts related to ALS into accessible language for a lay audience.
    • Prepare detailed reports and summaries of ALS research findings and breakthroughs for dissemination to donors, researchers, people with ALS and their loved ones and the public.
    • Collaborate with the science team to ensure accurate representation of scientific data and advancements.
  • Brand Amplification
    • Craft narratives that highlight the Target ALS/Dan Doctoroff origin story and the foundation’s mission and impact.
    • Develop content that encourages a culture of promotion and actively engages with the ALS community and broader public.
    • Support efforts to participate in international conferences, symposiums, and ALS-specific events with compelling written materials.
  • Media Engagement
    • Write and distribute press releases to promote breaking news, funding calls, successes, and new partnerships.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with media outlets and journalists to secure coverage of Target ALS’s initiatives and milestones.
  • Collaboration
    • Work closely with the marketing, communications, and fundraising teams to align content with organizational goals and strategies.
    • Assist in developing and implementing digital fundraising campaigns and strategies.
  • Quality Control
    • Ensure all written content is accurate, well-researched, and aligns with Target ALS’s branding and messaging guidelines.
    • Edit and proofread content for clarity, grammar, and style consistency.

 
 
Qualifications
 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • Proven experience as a science writer or communicator, preferably within the biomedical research or nonprofit sectors.
  • Strong understanding of ALS and related neurological diseases is highly desirable.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with a portfolio of published scientific content.
  • Ability to translate complex scientific information into clear, engaging content for diverse audiences.
  • Familiarity with graphic design tools such as Adobe InDesign, Canva.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively.
