Position Summary: The Associate Executive Director (AED) will support the Executive Director (ED) in overseeing the strategic, operational, financial, and fundraising aspects of the Institute for Humane Education. The AED will be responsible for helping to drive key initiatives, managing day-to-day operations, fostering relationships with funders and foundations, and representing the organization to the world. This role requires a dynamic and caring leader with a strong commitment to the Institute’s mission and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Leadership:

    • Collaborate with the ED, President, and Board of Directors to develop and implement strategic plans that align with IHE’s mission and goals

    • Help lead the planning and execution of key initiatives and programs, ensuring they are impactful and aligned with organizational objectives

  2. Program Management:

    • Work with others on the leadership team to oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of IHE’s programs and educational initiatives

    • Ensure programs are effective and equitable

  3. Operational Oversight:

    • Assist in managing daily operations, including hiring, onboarding, and support of staff, budget oversight, and resource allocation

    • Develop and implement policies, procedures, platforms, and organizational structures to ensure efficient and effective operations

  4. Financial Management:

    • Assist in the development and management of the annual budget

    • Monitor financial performance and ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures

  5. Fundraising and Development:

    • Support fundraising efforts by identifying and cultivating potential donors, writing grant proposals, and assisting with donor relations

    • Collaborate with the development team to create and execute fundraising campaigns and events

  6. Community and Stakeholder Engagement:

    • Be among the IHE leaders who represent the organization at public events, conferences, and meetings

    • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including partners, educators, and community leaders

  7. Staff Leadership:

    • Provide leadership and support to IHE staff, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment

    • Support professional development and training opportunities for staff

  8. Reporting and Evaluation:

    • Prepare reports for the Board of Directors and other stakeholders on organizational performance and impact

    • Conduct regular evaluations of programs and initiatives to ensure continuous improvement

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; advanced degree preferred.

  • Experience: Minimum of 7 years of experience in a leadership role within a nonprofit or education-focused organization. Experience with and/or knowledge of humane education, social justice, environmental sustainability, and animal protection. 

  • Skills:

    • Proven leadership and management skills, with experience in strategic planning and program development

    • Strong financial acumen and experience with budget management

    • Experience with donor relations, grant writing, and development strategies

    • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

    • Ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders

    • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of the Institute for Humane Education

Compensation: The annual salary for this position will be $70,000 to $80,000 commensurate with experience.
