Position Overview
The Director of Finance is a key member of the senior leadership team, reporting directly to the President & CEO, and is responsible for the overall financial management of the organization, including budgeting, accounting, compliance, and reporting. This role requires deep experience with budget preparation, oversight, and compliance tied to city, state, and federal governmental grants, as well as the ability to ensure financial integrity across multiple funding streams. The ideal candidate will combine technical financial acumen with a strategic mindset and a passion for advancing equity and opportunity for Harlem’s youth.
Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management and Oversight

  • Lead the organization’s financial operations, including payroll, accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, and cash management.
  • Develop, monitor, and manage organizational and grant-specific budgets, ensuring alignment with programmatic goals and funder requirements.
  • Oversee budget preparation and financial oversight for government contracts (City, State, and Federal), including cost allocation, allowable expense tracking, and compliance with funding guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the Grants and Program teams to prepare budget proposals, expenditure forecasts, and financial reports for submission to government agencies and foundations.
  • Prepare and submit timely invoices and reimbursement requests to funders; monitor cash flow and receivables to ensure sustainability.
  • Produce monthly and quarterly financial reports for senior leadership, the Board of Directors, and key stakeholders, highlighting variances, trends, and actionable insights.Maintain and enhance financial controls, policies, and systems to support organizational growth and transparency.

Human Resources and Operations

  • Oversee HR functions related to payroll and benefits administration.
  • Collaborate with the operations team to support facilities management and ensure cost-effective use of resources.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive financial management experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory capacity. Demonstrated experience preparing and managing budgets for government-funded programs, including grant compliance, cost reporting, and audits.
  • Knowledge of governmental grant systems and reporting platforms such as HHS Accelerator, PASSPort, and CMS. Proficiency in accounting software (Sage Intacct preferred) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate financial data into strategic insight. Excellent communication skills and a collaborative leadership style.
