Make the Road PA and Make the Road Action in PA are seeking a detail-oriented, passionate, and experienced Operations Director to run the operations and administration of our organization. 

Location: Hybrid, 3 days in office and 2 days remote, based in one of our 4 locations: Philadelphia, Hazleton, Reading, or Allentown, PA

Travel: Weekly travel to other offices, approximately 2 days/week

Supervised by: Co-Executive Director

Supervises: Operations Coordinator

About the organization: Make the Road PA was launched in 2014 and, over the last decade, has quickly become one of the largest Latinx organizations in the state of Pennsylvania. MRPA now runs three robust organizing centers in Reading, Allentown, and Philadelphia. We have a strong, engaged membership base of Black and Brown working-class people, primarily in Latinx communities. We have a strong track record of local and state campaigns, large-scale mobilizations on federal issues, large-scale civic engagement work, and active leadership among key progressive organizing groups, coalitions, and tables across the state. 

About the position: The Operations Director is a vital position at Make the Road PA and Make the Road Action PA. This position oversees all operations and administrative functions of both organizations including general operations, HR, budget and expense management, and staff supervision. This position sits on the Senior Leadership Team and will act as a key strategic partner with the Co-Executive Directors and other SLT members. This position supervises the Operations Coordinator and will be a key player in their professional development. This is largely not a member-facing position, but successful candidates will be comfortable speaking with members. As we move into the 2026 midterm election season, this position will play a key role in MRPA and MRAPA running successful programming.

Job responsibilities: 

Operations, Administration, and Finance

  • Oversee all operations and administrative activities of MRPA and MRAPA, including coordination with our national organizations Make the Road States and Make the Road Action:

    • Manage contracts and vendors;

    • Oversee management of all 4 offices, including negotiation of real estate leases;

    • Oversee management of digital infrastructure, including coordinating directly with platform vendors for IT support and setting up accounts on platforms for staff;

    • Work with MRS and MRA legal and compliance departments to ensure organizational 501(c)(3) MRPA and 501(c)(4) MRAPA compliance;

  • Work with the Senior Leadership Team and Co-Executive Directors to build and manage the organization’s budget;

  • Plan and organize logistics for staff and public events, including the staff retreat and co-leading our yearly fundraising gala with the Development Manager.

People & Culture

  • Lead all HR functions including: 

    • Assist hiring managers in hiring processes, including writing job descriptions for new positions; 

    • Onboard new staff and offboard exiting staff;

    • Work with managers on performance evaluation of staff they supervise;

    • Develop and maintain policies that sustain MRPA’s equitable and sustainable workplace environment;

    • Act as point on staff compensation, benefits, and professional development;

  • Own the development and implementation of strategies to strengthen organizational culture and drive initiatives that enhance staff experience, belonging, and equity.

Management & Leadership

  • Drive annual planning and goal setting for the operations team, in alignment with organizational strategy and direction;

  • Directly manage the Operations Coordinator and consultants, providing guidance, support, and accountability in implementing plans;

  • Ensure strong collaboration and coordination with other teams and staff as needed; hold the team accountable to other teams that are depending on them;

  • Serve on the Senior Leadership Team, give input on strategic decisions, and build trust, cohesion, and alignment between operations staff/team and the organization’s mission and overall direction.

Must Have Qualifications:

  • People centered culture builder: Demonstrated track record of developing and implementing people centered systems and practices at the organizational level, having HR/People experience within a similarly sized organization (approximately 30 staff and 4 offices). Deep experience in at least one or more of the following functional areas: recruiting and hiring; training and coaching; equity, inclusion, and belonging; organizational and individual performance management; organizational risk management; organizational change management. 

  • Operations & systems expertise: Demonstrated track record of designing, implementing, and maintaining strong team or organization-wide systems to maximize efficiency, transparency, equity, and usability. Experience with budget and expense management (approximately $20,000-$30,000/month in expenses). General understanding of nonprofit compliance regulations, with an interest in gaining experience in this area. 

  • Effective people & project management: Practices equitable, sustainable, and results driven management. Coordinates and collaborates effectively across a complex and multifaceted state organization. Ability to lead a team in developing goals and plans, adhering to deadlines, and prioritizing tasks.

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented problem-solver: Manages a high volume of work with efficiency. Holds the big picture while managing the details; juggles competing priorities and makes smart judgements on where to invest resources. Strong discernment to identify practical solutions to complex problems and challenges.

Preferred Experience: 

  • Required: 

    • 5-7 years of experience in an operations role at a nonprofit organization, ideally at a grassroots basebuilding organization like MRPA; 

    • 1-2 years of supervision experience;

    • Proficiency or fluency in English and Spanish;

    • Experience with budget tracking in Sheets or Excel;

    • Experience with an expense tracking system like Enterprise;

    • Experience using Box;

    • Experience planning staff retreats and member events of at least 75 people; 

  • Preferred: 

    • Any kind of experience, paid or unpaid, in a member-facing position at an organization with a year-round membership base; 

    • Experience negotiating real estate leases.

Salary and benefits: 

Salary: $90,000. Please note that to maintain equity, MRPA operates on a salary schedule based on position seniority, so we unfortunately are unable to negotiate salaries.

The work schedule can at times be greater than 40 hours per week and includes evening and weekend meetings and events, as necessary. It is not a strictly 9am-5pm position.
