Description
Reporting to the Director of Marketing & Communication, the Manager of Mission Communications will be responsible for executing an integrated communications strategy, including building out messaging frameworks and journeys for target audiences to achieve organizational goals. The ideal candidate will have a background in communications, an understanding of the biomedical research and nonprofit fields, and excellent storytelling skills. This role will be crucial in developing content that communicates impact in ALS research, amplifying awareness of Target ALS and gaining brand authority, and ultimately converting priority audiences into Target ALS champions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Strategic Communications
- Support Director, Marketing and Communications with development of integrated mission communications strategy and manage execution to achieve organizational goals
- Develop messaging frameworks and journeys for target audiences, including researchers, the ALS community, and donors
- Translate complex scientific initiatives into accessible messaging that communicates impact for lay audiences
- Maintain consistent organizational voice across all channels
- Storytelling & Content Creation
- Build and maintain a story pipeline that highlights Target ALS’s mission, model and impact, programs, announcements, and members of the Target ALS Innovation Ecosystem
- Write and disseminate impactful, high-quality content including research articles, press releases, blog posts, emails and newsletters, impact reports, grant narratives, community resources, etc.
- Collaborate with Director, Marketing and Communications and Manager, Digital Marketing to transform written work into compelling multi-media stories for amplified impact, including graphic and video assets, webinars, decks, and more
- Working with Manager, Digital Marketing, identify high-traffic keywords or themes and craft articles to improve SEO/GEO performance.
- Draft questions and interview stakeholders, including scientists, partners, and members of the ALS community
- Maintain organized storyboard, including system to track story sourcing needs, review status, and publishing for alignment and visibility among internal teams
- Thought Leadership & Brand Authority
- Develop thought leadership strategy for organization and team members, especially Chief Executive Officer and VP, Scientific Programs, to establish Target ALS as the leader in ALS research worldwide
- Manage LinkedIn presence for Chief Executive Officer, including coordinating and drafting posts on a regular basis
- Coordinate communications strategy for international conferences and symposiums, including reviewing presentations, drafting post-event reflections, creating toolkits for staff participation and more
- Identify and pitch to obtain appearances and speaking slots at conferences, on podcasts, in interviews, and other high-visibility opportunities
- Media & Public Relations
- Draft press releases and media pitches to publicize Target ALS announcements and amplify the organization’s visibility
- Develop and maintain relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers to secure coverage of Target ALS’s initiatives and milestones.
- Support multi-media announcement strategy for campaign announcements, research initiatives, partnerships, and milestones
- Collaboration & Teamwork
- Collaborate with the Development and Marketing/ Communications Team to align content with departmental goals
- Collaborate with the Science Team to source, write, and review research-focused stories, coordinate quarterly scientific newsletters, and maintain researcher Slack channel
- Assist in developing and implementing digital fundraising campaigns and strategies
- Other duties as assigned
- Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
- Proven experience as a writer and communicator, preferably within the biomedical research and/or nonprofit sectors, with a portfolio of published scientific content.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of ALS or related neurological diseases is highly desirable.
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with ability to translate complex scientific information into clear, engaging content for diverse audiences.
- Familiarity with graphic design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively and develop relationships with a wide range of individuals.
- Self-motivated and driven to make a positive impact on the community.
- Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain strict confidentiality.
- Ability to travel as needed, including overnight.
