Alpha Sigma Tau

Since its founding in 1899, Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority has provided women with the community, skills, and empowerment to excel in life. With over 72,000 total initiated members since 1899, Alpha Sigma Tau is rooted in its core values of Intellect, Excellence, Graciousness, Respect, and Connections, and believes the membership experience is strengthened and enriched when the diverse identities of members are embraced, respected, and celebrated. The more than 70 active collegiate chapters are on a range of campuses, primarily small- to mid-sized public universities, and small liberal arts colleges. 

Alpha Sigma Tau is a membership organization, with funding primarily composed of membership dues, supported by event registrations and foundation contributions. The Foundation supports the Sorority’s mission by funding scholarships, educational programs, and leadership initiatives. The Sorority and Foundation are headquartered in Indianapolis, with more than a dozen employees across the United States.
 

Chief Executive Officer

Reporting to the National Council and Foundation Board, the CEO leads and oversees Alpha Sigma Tau’s two related entities, the Sorority (501c7) and the Foundation (501c3). The CEO is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and financial management; they will lead the National Headquarters Staff, advance Alpha Sigma Tau’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, and support excellent member and donor services.

A successful leader will direct organizational growth and transformation to position Alpha Sigma Tau for long-term sustainability and success. They will strategically problem solve, pivot when necessary, and think creatively in support of long-term organizational sustainability. The CEO will lead strategic planning processes and operationalize the implementation plans, collaborating closely with the National Council, Foundation Board, staff, and key stakeholders.
 

Qualifications

The next CEO of Alpha Sigma Tau must be mission-driven, ethical, organized, strategic, and collaborative. This role requires the ability to think, plan, and lead strategically, while managing the tasks to get the work done. The CEO will value and share Alpha Sigma Tau’s commitment to empowering women and cultivating inclusive, welcoming, and safe spaces that promote dignity and respect for all members. 
Additionally, the successful candidate will have:

  • Experience: Minimum seven years of professional experience in a related field or five years of senior-level experience. Understanding of the unique challenges facing fraternal organizations today and experience working or volunteering with a membership-based organization.
  • Organizational Leadership: Ability to navigate a complex organization, manage risks, and engage key stakeholders to promote long-term sustainability. Exceptional communication skills, a collaborative orientation, and strong motivational and inspirational abilities is key. 
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to prioritize and attend to important strategic work, while addressing urgent day-to-day needs. The ability to find creative solutions, to persevere through adversity, and to maintain and inspire an optimistic, growth-oriented, resilient orientation.
  • Financial Acumen: Comfort managing finances/budgets and experience using data and metrics to make informed and strategic decisions.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; preference for a master’s degree in a relevant field business administration, nonprofit management, education, or related field.
  • Travel & Hybrid Schedule: the CEO may reside in any location in the continental US, with a preference for candidates in the Indianapolis region. The CEO is expected to attend regular evening meetings, travel frequently to the Indianapolis Headquarters and attend in-person meetings across the United States, as needed. Valid U.S. Driver’s License and ability to operate a vehicle is required.

While not required, there is appreciation for additional education, skills, and experiences, including: fraternal organization membership, professional experience with 501c7 and 501c3 organizations; and/or Certified Association Executive or Certified Fund Raising Executive certification. 

Excellent candidates who don’t meet every qualification described are still encouraged to apply; demonstration of transferable skills and experience will be valued. The anticipated hiring range for the CEO is $110,000 – $150,000, with benefits including retirement contributions, paid time off, and health benefits.
