About the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO)
Widely known for engaging deeply with state chiefs and state education agencies, CCSSO advocates effectively, representing and advocating on behalf of every state and territorial K-12 education leader. CCSSO cultivates leadership, connects people and ideas, and influences all involved to take collective action to improve our nation’s education system for all students.
CCSSO is the only education nonprofit whose membership represents the leadership of K-12 education systems in all 50 states. In addition, it serves the educational leadership of the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, the Bureau of Indian Education, and five U.S. extra-state jurisdictions. Collectively, CCSSO’s efforts help to impact the educational needs of 50 million students, 3.8 million teachers, 98,200 schools, and 13,600 school districts.

About the Position
This is a newly defined position. The Controller will report to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and work closely with the CFO and members of the Executive Team.
The Controller will lead day-to-day operations of the accounting department, including accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, and project management and reporting. The Controller directly supervises two, the Senior Accountant and Accountant positions.
Ideal candidates will have experience in change management and the ability to analyze the existing processes and systems, working closely with the CFO and others, to make strong recommendations for streamlining current systems, leveraging new information technology, and establishing standard operating procedures that provide maximum benefit to all parties involved.

Key Qualifications
- Should have a bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration. Prior nonprofit finance experience with an organization with revenues of at least $15 – $20 million and a successful track record in a senior financial management role for at least 5+ years is essential
- Ability to anticipate the infrastructure and systems needs in a complex, national nonprofit and experience in change management.
- Exceptional management and customer service skills
- Recognized success in developing and monitoring systems to manage both internal operations and programmatic work that involve high levels of collaboration, particularly with program directors and other senior leadership
- An accessible, visible, and flexible management style that inspires trust and confidence in staff to work hard and well together
- Keen analytic, organization, and problem-solving skills that support and enable sound decision making in a complex organization; demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems
- Direct and concise communication skills. Active listener. Ability to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers
- Technology savvy with the ability to manage data for financial reporting quickly and effectively
- Personal qualities of integrity and credibility, and commitment to the mission and goals of the Council
Preferred Qualifications
- Preference will be given to candidates with the Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant or Masters of Business Administration.
- Experience working in a nonprofit organization and non-partisan, membership-driven organization.
- Experience with Sage Intacct and Asana.
- Experience in forecasting and predictive analytics.
Compensation: The salary range for this position is $120,000-$140,000 with competitive retirement and health care benefits which include but not limited to:
