Organization Overview:
Variety, National Capital Region (Variety DC) is a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of children with disabilities in DC, MD and VA by providing funds for adaptive bikes, modifications for vans, emergency support, and compassion funds for at-home mobility needs. Our mission is to create opportunities for children to engage in physical activities, promoting independence, mobility, and inclusion. Through fundraising, partnerships and community outreach, we aim to enhance the quality of life for children with disabilities, enabling them to experience the joy of cycling and other activities they might otherwise be unable to enjoy. A 501(c )3 organization, Variety DC is the local chapter of Variety International consisting of 38 chapters globally, with 17 in the United States.
Position Summary:
The Executive Director (ED) will lead Variety DC in fulfilling its mission to provide adaptive bikes and equipment to children with disabilities. This individual will oversee all aspects of the organization, including fundraising, operations, program development, and financial management with the support of the volunteer board of directors. The ED will be responsible for ensuring the nonprofit’s sustainability and growth while cultivating a culture of inclusivity, compassion, and excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Leadership:
- Work closely with the Board of Directors to ensure alignment with the nonprofit’s mission, vision, and goals. The board meets virtually every two months to review finances, discuss events and review applications.
- Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including healthcare providers, donors, grant recipient families, and community organizations.
2. Fundraising and Development:
- Execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy to secure financial support, including grant writing, event planning, donor relations, corporate sponsorships.
- Cultivate relationships with major donors and work closely with the Board of Directors to strengthen the organization’s financial base.
- Plan and oversee fundraising events and community initiatives that align with the mission of the organization.
- Additional support is received through a unique connection to the movie theatre industry.
3. Financial and Operational Management:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the nonprofit, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of programs.
- Manage the organization’s budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and long-term financial stability.
- Work with the Treasurer, Finance Manager and volunteer Treasurer and Auditor to regularly review financial reports and serve as liaison to the Auditor to complete an annual audit.
4. Program Management:
- Supervise the implementation of grant distribution programs, ensuring children with disabilities receive the equipment and support they need.
- Bring completed applications to the 6 board meetings per year to review requests for support.
- Collaborate with Children’s National, Kennedy Krieger, Fight for Children and other organizations to maximize impact and identify new opportunities for growth.
- Represent the nonprofit in meetings and events, raising awareness of the organization’s mission and impact.
- Manage social media and website.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience (5+ years) in nonprofit leadership, with at least 3 years in a development role.
- Compassion for the unique needs of children with disabilities, particularly in adaptive equipment and mobility.
- Experience in fundraising, social media, donor relations, and securing major gifts.
- Financial acumen with experience managing budgets, financial planning, and reporting.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a Board of Directors.
Compensation:
- This is a remote, contract position offering $60-65,000 per year payable monthly. Candidates must live in DC, MD or VA.
