Position Summary
Paralegals are critical members of CLC’s litigation team, supporting all CLC’s trial and appellate litigation across issue areas. The Paralegal works with CLC’s litigation attorneys to finalize and submit court filings, provide logistical support for depositions and trials both remotely and in-person, and maintain CLC’s litigation case files and conflicts check database.
This position is a full-time hybrid role that requires living in the Washington, DC area, to complete in-person tasks, for access to the office, local courthouses, and errands, when necessary.
This position is an entry level paralegal position. Please review the posted salary range before applying.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare documents for court filing, including by:
- Preparing final electronic and paper filings pursuant to applicable court rules
- Creating and attaching exhibits and appendices
- Creating tables of contents and tables of authorities
- Formatting documents to ensure compliance with applicable court rules
- Proof-reading
- Citation-checking
- File court documents in accordance with local rules in federal and state court
- Liaise with court clerks’ offices
- Assist with deposition, pre-trial, and trial preparation, including preparing exhibits and attachments, assisting with travel arrangements and other logistics, coordinating with courtroom staff and court reporters, and providing on-the-ground support for in-person trials
- Assist attorneys with obtaining and maintaining bar and court membership
- Assist with discovery work, including document review and maintaining e-discovery databases
- Create and maintain electronic case files
- Provide legal assistance to non-litigation attorneys as required, such as reviewing draft legislative language and citation-checking and proof-reading policy documents, including those filed with government agencies
- Project management
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- At least one year of experience as a paralegal or in a comparable support position at a law firm, advocacy organization, government agency, or other entity engaged in federal litigation preferred.
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Ability to organize and maintain file systems
- Proficiency with MS Word and Adobe Acrobat required. Proficiency with formatting features such as applying Styles, creating tables, exhibit stickers, and Bates stamping preferred.
- Experience with Bluebook citation rules preferred
- Familiarity with Nextpoint or another e-discovery software preferred
- Demonstrated interest in public-interest legal work preferred
Interview/Hiring Timeline:
This interview process is anticipated to take approximately eight weeks. There will be two parts to the interview (after submission of your resume and cover letter). If you are chosen, the hiring team will contact you for 1) a 45 – 60 minute Zoom interview and 2) (for those applicants who advance based on the interview) a short Bluebook assessment, which you will be given 48 hours to complete and return.
