Description

About DC Justice Lab:

DC Justice Lab (DCJL) is a team of law and policy experts devoted to fundamentally reimagining the District of Columbia’s system of punishment—one of the largest, most expensive, and racially-imbalanced systems in the United States. We are working to eradicate the root causes of crime, violence, and lack of freedom for DC residents and instead maximize safety and freedom for all, where each person is treated as an essential and valued member of our community.

Our work is researching smarter safety solutions, changing local practices (including more than a dozen laws to date), shifting public attitudes about community safety, and training others to do the same. Through authentic community engagement, deep legal research, and effective strategic communication, we have already left an indelible mark on the city.

We are learners, doers, and teachers, who are excited to share information and cultivate power in DC communities to transform the local legislative and policy landscape. Our tight-knit team is passionately committed to working in collaboration, honoring each other’s commitment to advancing racial equity, and cultivating a positive environment that inspires systemic change.
